Tour de Vino 2026: Cycle Through Yadkin Valley Wine Country This May
Combining two of North Carolina's greatest pleasures — cycling scenic mountain roads and tasting exceptional wines — the Tour de Vino returns to Yadkin Valley on May 16, 2026. As announced on Meetup, this annual cycling event offers riders five challenging distances while supporting local trails and wine culture.
Five Routes Through Wine Country
Starting from Elkin High School, cyclists can choose their adventure with routes spanning 30, 31, 50, 71, or 100 miles through Surry, Wilkes, Yadkin, and Alleghany counties. Each route has been carefully mapped on Ride with GPS, taking participants through some of the most scenic wine country in North Carolina.
The varied distances mean everyone from casual weekend riders to serious cyclists can participate. The shorter routes are perfect for families or those who want to save energy for wine tasting, while the century ride challenges experienced cyclists with breathtaking mountain terrain.
Registration Includes Wine Festival Access
Your $40 registration ($50 day-of) covers more than just the ride. Participants receive:
- A free tasting ticket to the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival
- Event t-shirt and swag bag
- Lunch to refuel after your ride
Supporting Local Trails
All proceeds benefit the Elkin Valley Trails Association, which maintains and develops the area's extensive trail network. These trails connect many local wineries and provide year-round recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
The timing couldn't be better for exploring the connection between cycling and wine country. Many Yadkin Valley wineries sit along scenic country roads perfect for cycling, and some even welcome cyclists with special parking and amenities.
Perfect Wine Country Base
Elkin serves as an ideal starting point for exploring Yadkin Valley's wine scene. Carolina Heritage Vineyard & Winery exemplifies what makes this region special — just minutes from the Tour de Vino start line, this organic winery offers award-winning wines in a cozy log cabin tasting room.
Their Heroes wine earned gold at the 2024 America's Wine Cup, while seasonal offerings like their Glogg mulled wine showcase the creativity flowing through Yadkin Valley. At $10-$15 for tastings and bottles ranging $12-$25, it's accessible luxury. The vineyard's hiking trail even connects to the NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail, making it a natural stop for active visitors.
The winery's laid-back atmosphere — complete with free-range chickens in the parking lot and Sully the dog greeting visitors — captures the unpretentious spirit that defines Yadkin Valley wine country.
Planning Your Wine Country Cycling Weekend
While the Tour de Vino happens just one day, smart visitors extend their stay to fully explore the region. Many participants arrive Friday evening to check into local accommodations and enjoy a relaxed dinner and wine tasting.
Saturday morning brings the cycling challenge, followed by the wine festival celebration. Sunday offers a perfect recovery day for leisurely winery visits and scenic drives through the countryside you just conquered on two wheels.
The May timing is ideal — spring weather is typically perfect for cycling, and vineyards are lush and green before summer heat sets in. Wildflowers bloom along country roads, creating postcard-perfect scenery for your ride.
