Free Wine & Cheese Every Friday: Wedgewood's Summer Drop-In Tastings Are Back in Yadkin Valley

Summer just got better out here. As listed on Eventbrite, Wedgewood Cheese Bar is bringing back their Summer Fridays: free weekly drop-in wine and cheese tastings every Friday from 3-5 PM, running Memorial Day through Labor Day. No reservations, no fee, no fuss.

If you've never sat down with a properly paired wine and cheese, this is a good place to start. Zero pressure, no ticket, just show up and taste.

What Makes These Tastings Worth Your Friday Afternoon

The format is simple, and that's the point. Arrive anytime during the two-hour window, stay as long as you want. Whether you're wrapping up a day of vineyard hopping or looking for a low-key intro to wine and cheese pairing, it works either way.

There's no minimum group size, which means it's just as easy to stop in solo as it is to bring a crowd. I've said it before about the Yadkin Valley: some of the best wine experiences here are the informal ones. This qualifies.

A Quick Word on Why Pairing Actually Matters

This isn't just snacking. The acidity in wine cuts through rich, creamy cheeses. Fat in cheese softens tannins in a bold red. A crisp North Carolina white alongside a local goat cheese is a different experience than either one on its own.

The tastings rotate throughout the summer, so if you come back week after week, you're going to encounter new combinations. That's actually a smart way to build your palate without sitting through a formal class.

Planning Your Visit

The 3-5 PM window hits a sweet spot on a hot summer day: past the midday heat, early enough that your evening is still open. If you want more time to ask the staff about specific pairings, arriving earlier in the window gives you that.

Wedgewood carries a solid selection of artisanal cheeses, a good number of them from North Carolina and regional producers. A lot of people pick up combinations they discovered during the tasting to bring home or take to a picnic at a nearby winery. The staff can point you toward local Yadkin Valley wines that pair well with whatever catches your eye.

Build a Full Day Around It

These Friday tastings work as either a starting point or a finish line. Come here first to get your palate oriented, then head out to nearby vineyards. Or do the vineyard circuit during the day and use this as a relaxed landing spot before dinner.

Dress casually. This is Yadkin Valley wine country, not a formal event. That's one of the things I love about this region: the welcome mat is always out.

The Full Summer Run

Memorial Day through Labor Day runs roughly 14 to 15 Fridays depending on the year. That's a long window. If you're local, you have plenty of chances to become a regular. If you're planning a visit from out of town, knowing this series exists is a good reason to time your trip to include a Friday afternoon.

There's a social element to these gatherings that you don't always get at a traditional tasting room visit. You're standing next to someone who drove up from Charlotte and someone else who lives ten minutes down the road, and you're all tasting the same thing. That's one of the quiet pleasures of the valley.
